Questions, questions, questions

Are you fed up yet with the accusations about the virus? We are driving less, so we are pumping fewer pollutants into our air. But we are smogging it with accusations and finger-pointing. (Fill in the blank) has blood on his/her/their hands!! He was late! He was early! The WHO screwed up. And all that.

Here is my humble attempt to clear a bit of the air. There are a few questions we might be wise to ask about the infamous virus crisis:

Why are the US numbers coming in much lower than experts predicted they would be? The experts will offer any number of reasons why their models were so far off. But are there other reasons?

Did all our quarantining and distancing contribute to the lower numbers? Or did we, instead, simply accept too many crazy projections from alarmists to begin with?

After all – or before all – some prominent epidemiologists projected 2.2 million virus deaths for this country. They revised that figure downward. Not once, but several times. The last projection I saw was around 50,000. That is a lot of revising.

Were we wrong to listen to them? Did they make big mistakes? Did they exhibit poor judgement? Or was the problem that they made scary projections based on too little data?

Meanwhile, did our sacrifices deliver the intended results? Did they flatten the curve? Did they lower the number of infections? Of deaths?

It was the government’s virus task force that recommended these sacrifices. They pushed us to pull the plug on the economy. The primary goal was to flatten the curve. The curve certainly flattened. And so, are there connections? You know, between the flattening and the sacrifices? Or was this dumb luck instead?

Let us suppose it was luck. If it was luck, why then are our figures better than those of many other countries? Our detection rate is fairly high. Our death rates are quite low. Why is this?

If it was not luck, what was it? We are getting excellent results. Compared with the projections, they are excellent. Who would we blame if they were terrible results? Who do we credit for the good results? Would the culprit have the same identity as the hero?

Can we begin to evaluate the federal government’s virus task force? Did it do a good or bad job in mobilizing the nation’s resources in this battle? Was the move to involve many of our big companies a good move? Did the task force help people understand the virus? Did it help people understand why the government crippled the economy and our social life?

Did the task force inspire Americans to behave in safer ways? That is, to stay home, to keep their distance, to wash their hands more, etc? Did it calm people? Did it address many or most of the concerns of anxious Americans?

Dr. Fauci told us many times the goal of the task force was to flatten the curve. Well, do we allow them to now claim mission accomplished?

Here is a good question: We have hundreds of leaders in many fields. These include our politicians, celebrities, writers, commentators, religious figures. You know, the people who sway our opinions, influence and inspire us. Did most of these leaders contribute in positive ways to the national effort to deal with this virus?

Here are a few questions of a different nature: Is this possibly a pivotal juncture for the empire of the Chinese communists? We are getting more and more reports that this virus may have, may have escaped from a Wuhan lab. Many reports suggest the communists tried to hide the virus and its potency from the world.

In other words, they may have screwed up big time. And then lied about it. And wiped out research that would embarrass them. And gagged some of their researchers who squealed. Perhaps caused them to disappear.

If – and it is a big if – some or all of this is true, what then? If they deceived the World Health Organization, what happens next? If their deceit brought about many thousands of deaths and many trillions in economic losses, what are the consequences?

Communists are the best in the world at lying. One of their basic beliefs is that they must control the flow of information. They must craft the narrative. In Orwellian fashion they must determine the “truth” of things, no matter the facts. To them, the Tiananmen Square massacre never happened.

Is it possible we are witnessing an almighty collision between facts and communist “truth”?
Our Secretary of State Pompeo calls on the communists to man up. “The Chinese government needs to come clean.” Strong words. President Trump openly doubts China has given us accurate figures.

Reagan famously demanded changes from the Soviet communists. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” In other words, end your imprisonment of your people.

If he was with us today, would he demand “President Xi, tear down this wall of deceit!”? In other words, end the lies and distortions for the good of your people and all humanity. Come clean. Make truth your currency.

That may seem far fetched. But is it any more far-fetched than the events that led up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of Soviet communism?

I suppose over the next few years we will have answers for most of the questions above. Or will we?
